Reliable Trenchers for Utility Installation and Underground Work

Alpine Equipment Repair rents walk-behind and ride-on trenchers for utility contractors, irrigation installers, landscapers, and general contractors across Utah. Whether you're running a residential sprinkler line in a Lehi backyard or trenching miles of fiber optic conduit along a commercial corridor in Salt Lake County, we have the right trencher to cut clean, consistent trenches in Utah's challenging soil conditions.

Utah's soil ranges from sandy benches along the Wasatch Front to heavy clay in valley bottoms and rocky ground near the foothills — and conditions can change within a single job site. Our trenchers are maintained to handle all of it: sharp chains, carbide-tipped teeth, and reliable engines that don't quit mid-trench. Walk-behind models give residential contractors and landscapers a compact, gate-friendly machine for irrigation and drainage work. Ride-on models give utility contractors the depth, speed, and consistency needed for fiber optic, gas line, water main, and electrical conduit installation over long distances.

Rent by the day, week, or month. We deliver trenchers to job sites throughout Salt Lake County and Utah County so your crew can start cutting as soon as the machine hits the ground. Call (801) 701-7394 to check availability and get a quote — we'll help you select the right trencher size and chain configuration for your specific soil conditions and trench specifications.

Choose the Right Trencher for Your Job

Walk-Behind Trenchers

For Residential & Small Commercial Jobs

Walk-behind trenchers are compact, maneuverable machines designed for jobs where a ride-on unit would be overkill or wouldn't fit. They're the standard choice for residential irrigation, landscape drainage, low-voltage wiring, and short utility runs. Most walk-behind models fit through standard 36-inch gates and operate in tight backyard spaces where a ride-on machine simply cannot go. Despite their compact size, these machines cut clean, consistent trenches at a steady pace that's far faster than hand-digging — most operators complete a typical residential sprinkler system trench in a single day.

Best For:

  • Residential sprinkler and irrigation lines
  • Landscape drainage (French drains, channel drains)
  • Low-voltage lighting and communication cable
  • Short gas line and water line runs
  • Backyard and confined-space trenching

Trench Depth: 12–36 in | Trench Width: 4–6 in | Fits Through Standard Gates

Ride-On Trenchers

For Commercial, Utility & Long-Run Trenching

Ride-on trenchers are production machines built for speed, depth, and long runs. When you're installing fiber optic conduit along a road corridor, trenching gas lines across a commercial site, or running irrigation mains for a sports complex, a ride-on trencher is the only practical choice. These machines cut deep, consistent trenches at a pace that walk-behind units simply cannot match. Ground-drive systems maintain steady chain speed independent of travel speed, ensuring clean trench walls and consistent depth even in mixed soil conditions. For Utah's booming fiber optic and utility infrastructure projects, ride-on trenchers are the standard production tool.

Best For:

  • Fiber optic and telecommunications conduit installation
  • Natural gas line and water main trenching
  • Commercial and municipal irrigation mains
  • Electrical conduit runs for site power
  • Subdivision utility installation (multi-lot runs)
  • Any trench over 36 in deep or longer than 200 ft

Trench Depth: 3–6 ft | Trench Width: 6–16 in | Ground Drive for Consistent Speed

Common Trencher Rental Applications

Irrigation Installation

Trench for residential sprinkler lines, commercial irrigation mains, and landscape drip systems. Walk-behind units handle most residential jobs; ride-on trenchers tackle commercial systems.

Fiber Optic & Telecom

Install fiber optic conduit, communication cable, and data infrastructure. Ride-on trenchers cut consistent-depth trenches over long distances for UTOPIA, Google Fiber, and private telecom runs.

Gas Line Installation

Trench for natural gas service lines and mains. Consistent depth control ensures you meet utility specifications and code requirements for cover depth.

Electrical Conduit

Run underground electrical conduit for site power, outdoor lighting, EV charger installations, and building service feeds.

Drainage & French Drains

Cut trenches for French drains, perimeter drains, and landscape drainage systems. Walk-behind trenchers fit into tight residential spaces where drainage problems are worst.

Water & Sewer Lines

Trench for residential water service lines and shallow sewer laterals. Ride-on trenchers handle deeper cuts for main lines and commercial connections.

Trencher Rental FAQs

What size trencher do I need for a sprinkler system?
For most residential sprinkler systems, a walk-behind trencher is the right choice. You'll typically need a 6-8 inch deep trench for lateral lines and 10-12 inches for main lines. Walk-behind trenchers cut up to 36 inches deep, which covers virtually all residential irrigation work. They also fit through standard backyard gates.
How deep can a ride-on trencher cut?
Our ride-on trenchers cut up to 6 feet deep, which covers most utility installation requirements including fiber optic (typically 24-36 in), gas lines (typically 18-36 in depending on line size), and water lines (typically 42-60 in depending on frost depth). The exact depth depends on the specific machine and chain configuration.
Can trenchers cut through rocky soil?
Yes, but soil conditions affect production speed and chain wear. Our trenchers are equipped with carbide-tipped teeth designed for Utah's mixed soil conditions — clay, rock, and cobble. For extremely rocky ground, let us know and we'll set up the machine with the appropriate chain and tooth combination. In some cases, a rock saw attachment or hydraulic breaker may be more efficient.
Do I need to call 811 before trenching?
Absolutely. Utah law requires you to call Blue Stakes (811) at least two business days before any excavation, including trenching. Blue Stakes will mark existing underground utilities on your site at no charge. Never trench without a current locate — hitting a gas line, fiber optic cable, or power line is dangerous and expensive.
What's the difference between a trencher and a mini excavator for digging a trench?
Trenchers cut a narrow, consistent-depth trench much faster than a mini excavator for long, straight runs. If you need a trench that's 4-16 inches wide over any significant distance, a trencher is far more efficient. Mini excavators are better for short, wide trenches, irregular shapes, or jobs that combine trenching with other excavation work. Call us and describe your project — we'll tell you which machine will be faster and more cost-effective.
Can I rent a trencher for just one day?
Yes. Our minimum rental is one day. For small residential jobs like a sprinkler system or French drain, a single day with a walk-behind trencher is usually sufficient. We also offer weekly and monthly rates for larger projects that need extended trenching time.
