Mini Excavator rental in Utah

The Right Size Excavator for Every Digging Project

Alpine Equipment Repair offers mini excavator rentals for homeowners, landscapers, plumbers, and general contractors throughout Utah County and Salt Lake County. Mini excavators are the most popular rental category we carry — and for good reason. They combine serious digging power with a compact footprint that fits through backyard gates, navigates between structures, and works in spaces that full-size excavators cannot access. From a weekend fence post project to a commercial utility installation, there is a mini excavator sized for the job.

Our mini excavator fleet ranges from 1-ton micro excavators that fit through a 36-inch gate to 6-ton midi excavators that deliver commercial-grade digging depth and breakout force. Every machine in our rental fleet is maintained by our in-house service technicians, ensuring reliable performance on your job site. We do not send out equipment that has not been thoroughly inspected — our reputation depends on your machine starting, running, and performing from the first hour to the last.

Whether you are a homeowner digging a trench for a sprinkler system or a contractor excavating foundations across multiple job sites, we make the rental process simple. Tell us what you are digging, how deep, and how tight the space is — we will match you with the right machine. Delivery is available throughout Salt Lake County and Utah County, or you can pick up smaller models from our American Fork yard. Call (801) 701-7394 to reserve your mini excavator today.

  • Micro Excavators (1-2 Ton) — Fit through 36-inch gates, perfect for residential backyards

  • Midi Excavators (5-6 Ton) — Commercial-grade depth and power for larger projects
  • Zero Tail Swing Models — Rotate safely next to walls and structures
  • Thumb and Coupler Attachments Available
  • Maintained and Inspected Before Every Rental

Micro, Mini, or Midi: Choose the Right Excavator Size

Micro Excavators (1-2 Ton)

Tight Spaces, Residential Access, DIY-Friendly

Micro excavators are the smallest machines in our fleet — and often the most useful for residential projects. At just 28 to 39 inches wide, these machines fit through standard backyard gates, navigate between houses, and work in spaces that no other excavator can reach. Despite their compact size, micro excavators dig 5 to 7 feet deep with enough breakout force to handle Utah's rocky clay soils.

Micro excavators are the top choice for homeowners tackling weekend DIY projects. Their intuitive controls are approachable for first-time operators, and their small footprint causes minimal disturbance to finished landscaping. If you have never operated an excavator before, a micro is the ideal starting point — and our team is happy to walk you through the controls at pickup or delivery.

Best For:

  • Sprinkler system trenching in residential yards
  • Fence post holes and small footings
  • Plumbing and sewer line repair
  • Landscape grading and drainage
  • Stump removal and root extraction

Digging Depth: 5 ft to 7 ft

Mini Excavators (3-4 Ton)

The General-Purpose Workhorse

Mini excavators in the 3 to 4-ton class represent the sweet spot between compact access and serious digging capability. These machines deliver 8 to 10 feet of digging depth with substantially more bucket force than micro models. They handle everything from residential utility installations to light commercial excavation with confidence.

For contractors, the 3 to 4-ton class is the daily driver. These machines are large enough to dig footings, install water and sewer lines, and excavate small basements, yet compact enough to work on residential lots without requiring oversized equipment transport. Zero tail swing models rotate safely next to walls, fences, and structures — critical on tight Utah lots where property lines are close.

Best For:

  • Water and sewer line installation
  • Foundation and footing excavation
  • Retaining wall preparation
  • Pool excavation (residential)
  • Utility trenching for gas, electric, and fiber

Digging Depth: 8 ft to 10 ft

Midi Excavators (5-6 Ton)

Commercial Power in a Compact Package

Midi excavators deliver commercial-grade performance for projects that demand more depth, reach, and breakout force than a standard mini can provide. With 12 to 15 feet of digging depth and significantly higher bucket and arm forces, midi excavators tackle deep utility installations, large foundation excavation, and commercial site work efficiently.

These machines bridge the gap between compact minis and full-size excavators. They are still transportable on a standard flatbed trailer and compact enough for most commercial job sites, but they dig deeper and move more material per cycle than anything in the 3 to 4-ton class. For contractors working on commercial projects, a midi excavator often eliminates the need to bring in a full-size machine.

Best For:

  • Deep utility installation (water main, storm drain)
  • Commercial foundation excavation
  • Parking lot and road subgrade work
  • Large retaining wall projects
  • Site demolition and concrete removal

Digging Depth: 12 ft to 15 ft

Common Mini Excavator Applications

Utility Trenching

Dig clean, precise trenches for water, sewer, gas, electrical, irrigation, and fiber optic lines. Excavators are faster and more accurate than hand digging.

Foundation Work

Excavate footings, stem walls, and small basements. Mini excavators provide the depth and precision that grading equipment cannot match.

Landscaping & Grading

Grade yards, install drainage, build terraces, and prepare sites for hardscaping. Micro models fit through backyard gates without damaging finished areas.

Plumbing & Sewer Repair

Expose and replace broken sewer lines, water mains, and septic components. Excavators make emergency plumbing repairs fast and safe.

Pool Excavation

Dig residential pool shells in backyards. Mini and midi excavators handle the depth while fitting in constrained residential spaces.

Stump & Root Removal

Extract tree stumps and root balls that stump grinders leave behind. Excavators remove the entire root system for clean replanting.

Mini Excavator Rental FAQs

What size mini excavator do I need?
It depends on how deep you need to dig and how tight your access is. Micro excavators (1-2 ton) dig 5 to 7 feet and fit through 36-inch gates — ideal for residential yards. Mini excavators (3-4 ton) dig 8 to 10 feet for general utility and foundation work. Midi excavators (5-6 ton) dig 12 to 15 feet for commercial projects. Call us with your project details and we'll recommend the right size.
Can a homeowner rent a mini excavator?
Absolutely. Many of our mini excavator rentals go to homeowners for sprinkler systems, fence posts, drainage projects, sewer line repairs, and landscaping. Micro excavators (1-2 ton) are particularly popular with DIY homeowners because of their approachable size and intuitive controls.
Will a mini excavator fit through my backyard gate?
Our micro excavators (1-2 ton) are as narrow as 28 inches and fit through standard 36-inch gates. Mini excavators (3-4 ton) are typically 60 to 72 inches wide and require wider access. Measure your gate or access point and let us know — we'll confirm which models will fit.
How deep can a mini excavator dig?
Digging depth depends on the machine size. Micro excavators dig 5 to 7 feet. Mini excavators (3-4 ton) dig 8 to 10 feet. Midi excavators (5-6 ton) dig 12 to 15 feet. If you need to go deeper than 15 feet, you may need a full-size excavator — call us to discuss your options.
Do I need to call 811 before digging?
Yes. Utah law requires you to call Blue Stakes (811) at least two business days before any excavation. They will mark underground utility locations for free. Never dig without having utilities located — it is dangerous and can result in significant fines and repair costs.
Can I rent a mini excavator for just one day?
Yes. We offer daily, weekly, and monthly rental rates. Our minimum rental is 4 hours (half-day). For weekend homeowner projects, a one or two-day rental is our most popular option.
