Compaction Equipment for Every Soil Type and Job Site

Alpine Equipment Repair rents plate compactors and jumping jack rammers for construction, landscaping, utility, and paving projects throughout Utah County and Salt Lake County. Proper compaction is one of the most critical steps in any earthwork project. Whether you are preparing a road base, backfilling a utility trench, or laying the foundation for a new patio, the density of your compacted material determines the long-term performance of everything built on top of it. Skipping compaction or using the wrong equipment leads to settling, cracked pavement, failed retaining walls, and expensive rework that could have been avoided with the right machine from the start.

Plate compactors deliver high-frequency vibration across a flat steel plate, making them the go-to choice for granular soils like sand, gravel, and crushed base material. They excel at paving preparation, patio base work, parking lot sub-base, and any flat-surface compaction task where uniform density over a wide area is the goal. Jumping jack rammers (also called trench compactors or tamping rammers) use a fundamentally different mechanism, delivering concentrated impact force through a smaller foot. That focused energy is what you need for cohesive soils like clay and silt, and for working in confined spaces such as trenches, around foundations, next to walls, and between utility pipes. Understanding the difference between these two types of compactors is essential for achieving proper density and passing inspection on any project in Utah.

Every compactor in our fleet is maintained and serviced by our in-house technicians at our American Fork shop. We check engines, vibration systems, base plates, fuel systems, and all wear components before each rental so you get equipment that starts on the first pull and performs reliably all day long. Our technicians understand the demands that Utah's rocky, clay-heavy soils put on compaction equipment, and we keep our machines in condition to handle those conditions. Rent by the day, week, or month with delivery directly to your job site anywhere in Utah County or Salt Lake County.

Choose the Right Compactor for Your Project

Plate Compactors

For Granular Soils, Paving, and Flat Surfaces

Plate compactors use a heavy steel plate driven by high-frequency vibration to consolidate loose granular materials. The flat, wide base distributes compaction force evenly across the surface, producing smooth, uniform results ideal for achieving the 95% or higher compaction density that most specifications require. They are the standard choice for preparing sub-base layers before pouring concrete or laying pavers, compacting gravel driveways, and finishing asphalt patches. Forward-plate models handle most general work, while reversible-plate compactors give you directional control for working against walls, curbs, and in tighter areas where you cannot simply drive forward in a straight line.

Best For:

  • Road base and sub-base preparation
  • Paver and patio base compaction
  • Gravel driveway and parking area prep
  • Asphalt patching and overlay work
  • Backfilling around slabs and flatwork
  • Landscape grading and pathway compaction

Rammers / Jumping Jacks

For Cohesive Soils, Trench Backfill, and Tight Spaces

Rammers, commonly called jumping jacks, deliver high-impact force through a narrow foot that penetrates and compacts cohesive soils like clay, silt, and mixed fill. The concentrated impact drives air and moisture out of soil layers far more effectively than a plate compactor can in these materials. A plate compactor on clay will simply ride on the surface without achieving meaningful density, whereas a rammer's percussive force drives deep into each lift to consolidate the material properly. Their compact footprint --- typically around 11 by 13 inches --- makes them indispensable for trench backfill around utility lines, compacting soil next to foundations, and working in any area where a plate compactor simply will not fit.

Best For:

  • Trench backfill for water, sewer, and utility lines
  • Foundation and footing backfill
  • Retaining wall backfill in tight spaces
  • Clay and silt soil compaction
  • Working between walls, pipes, and structures
  • Any confined-space compaction where a plate compactor cannot reach

Common Compactor Applications

Paving & Road Base Prep

Compact gravel sub-base and aggregate base course to spec before asphalt or concrete paving. Proper base compaction prevents cracking and settling.

Trench Backfill

Compact soil in lifts around water lines, sewer pipes, electrical conduit, and gas lines. Rammers reach the bottom of narrow trenches where other equipment cannot.

Patio & Paver Installation

Create a solid, level base for pavers, flagstone, and concrete patios. Plate compactors produce the smooth, even surface that paver installations require.

Foundation & Footing Work

Compact backfill around foundations, footings, and stem walls. Rammers handle the cohesive soils and confined spaces common in foundation work.

Landscaping & Grading

Compact fill material for retaining walls, garden beds, pathways, and landscape grading. Achieve proper density to prevent future settling.

Utility & Infrastructure

Meet compaction specifications for municipal utility installations, sidewalk replacement, and curb-and-gutter work throughout Utah County and Salt Lake County.

Compactor Rental FAQs

What's the difference between a plate compactor and a jumping jack rammer?
Plate compactors use high-frequency vibration across a wide, flat plate. They work best on granular soils like sand, gravel, and crushed rock, and on flat surfaces for paving prep. Jumping jack rammers deliver concentrated impact force through a narrow foot. They are designed for cohesive soils like clay and silt and for confined spaces like trenches and areas next to foundations. Using the wrong type for your soil will not achieve proper compaction density.
How do I know which compactor I need?
It depends on your soil type and the space you're working in. Granular soils (sand, gravel, crushed base) compact best with a plate compactor. Cohesive soils (clay, silt, mixed fill) require a rammer. If you're working in a trench or tight space regardless of soil type, a rammer is usually the better choice. Call us at (801) 701-7394 and describe your project --- we'll recommend the right equipment.
Can I compact asphalt with a plate compactor?
Yes. Plate compactors are commonly used for asphalt patch work and overlay compaction. For larger asphalt jobs near curbs and edges, a reversible plate compactor gives you better control. We can help you choose the right size plate for your asphalt project.
How deep can I compact in a single lift?
Most plate compactors effectively compact granular material in 6- to 8-inch lifts. Rammers typically compact cohesive soils in 4- to 6-inch lifts. Always compact in lifts rather than trying to compact deep fills all at once --- it's the only way to achieve uniform density throughout the fill.
Do compactors require any special fuel or maintenance during the rental?
Our compactors run on regular unleaded gasoline. We deliver them fueled and ready to go. For multi-day rentals, just keep the fuel topped off. Check the air filter if you're working in dusty conditions. If anything seems off, call us and we'll handle it.
What's the rental minimum?
Minimum rental is 4 hours (half-day). Daily, weekly, and monthly rates offer significant savings for longer projects. Most backfill and paving prep jobs benefit from a full-day or weekly rental.
